Fractional and negative indices (#256)

Indices can be negative numbers or fractions.

Fractional indices represent a root and negative indices represent a reciprocal:

  • a1y=aya^{\frac{1}{y}}=\sqrt[y]{a}
  • axy=axya^{\frac{x}{y}}=\sqrt[y]{a^x}
  • a−x=1axa^{-x}=\dfrac{1}{a^x}

Example 1

Simplify a−2a^{-2}

1a2\dfrac{1}{a^{2}}

Example 2

Simplify b13b^{\frac{1}{3}}

b3\sqrt[3]{b}

Example 3

Simplify c−25c^{-\frac{2}{5}}

1c25\dfrac{1}{\sqrt[5]{c^{2}}} or 1(c5)2\dfrac{1}{(\sqrt[5]{c})^{2}}

Example 4

Simplify 2−42^{-4}

116\dfrac{1}{16}

Example 5

Simplify 163416^{\frac{3}{4}}

88

Example 6

Simplify 27−2327^{-\frac{2}{3}}

19\dfrac{1}{9}
