Overview

  • Qualification: OCR Level 3 Advanced GCE in Chemistry A (H432)
  • First Assessment: 2017
  • Latest Version: 2.9 (June 2025)
  • Approach: Content-led, modular structure

Course Structure

The A Level is divided into six teaching modules:

  1. Module 1: Development of practical skills
    • Practical skills assessed in written exams and through the Practical Endorsement (non-exam assessment).
  2. Module 2: Foundations in chemistry
    • Atomic structure, quantitative chemistry, acids, redox, bonding.
  3. Module 3: Periodic table and energy
    • Periodicity, Group 2, halogens, qualitative analysis, enthalpy, reaction rates, equilibrium.
  4. Module 4: Core organic chemistry
    • Basic organic concepts, hydrocarbons, alcohols, haloalkanes, synthesis, IR and MS analysis.
  5. Module 5: Physical chemistry and transition elements
    • Advanced rates, equilibrium, pH, buffers, thermodynamics, redox, electrode potentials, transition metals.
  6. Module 6: Organic chemistry and analysis
    • Aromatic compounds, carbonyls, carboxylic acids, nitrogen compounds, polymers, synthesis, chromatography, NMR.

Assessment

  • Three written papers (synoptic and extended response questions included):
    1. Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry (37%)
    2. Synthesis and analytical techniques (37%)
    3. Unified chemistry (26%)
  • Practical Endorsement (Component 04)
    • Separate pass/fail reported on certificate.
    • Requires completion of at least 12 practical activities from defined Practical Activity Groups (PAGs).
    • Assessed against Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC).

Key Features

  • Co-teachable with AS Level Chemistry A.
  • Emphasis on practical skills integrated with theory.
  • Mathematical requirements embedded throughout (≥20% of exam marks).
